From the Abbé Chalut
Friday May 1st [1778]

The abbé Chalut has the honor to pay his compliments to Mr. Franklin and begs him on behalf of his brother to come dine with him one day next week. The day is Mr. Franklin’s choice. It is to dine with an ambassador who very much wants to see him.

Madame Chalut sends him a thousand compliments and little Lucile wishes to give him a hug even though she does not wish to be an American, but perhaps she will change her mind. She appreciates your proposal to buy her. The abbé Arnoux is here and assures you of his respectful affection. Monsieur Adams and the dear young one are invited too if you want.

Addressed: To Monsieur / Monsieur Franklin / Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States / of America / at Passy
