From Ezekiel Forman (unpublished)
Auburn July 19th. 1787.
Sir

I have the Honor to present to your Excelly a matter of curiosity sent by Signor Falconi from New York. In conversation with Falconi, in company with some Gentlemen at New York, it was observed, that your Excellency had been curious to investigate some matters of a similar nature with this; Falconi said, that he had the Honor to see, and converse with your Excellency in France, that he did not doubt your understanding the use of the three sticks or pieces now presented: the end of one of the two small pieces you will find to fit the Hole or Mortise in the flat piece exactly. Falconi engages to put the two into the Mortise in the flat piece at one and the same time, without the least alteration in the construction of either of the three. And this I understand to be the mysterious part of the business. I shall do myself the Honor to wait upon your Excellency in a few days, When, if you shall request any further information, Falconi has engaged to communicate on paper the most satisfactory explanation. I have the Honor to be Your Excellency Most Obedent, and Most Humble Servant,

Ezek Forman.

Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esqr.
