From Francis Childs (unpublished)
New York Oct. 31. 1785
Honored Sir

Yours by Mr. Taylor I have had the honor of receiving, and am much obliged by your very generous attention. Having so good an opportunity of conveying a Letter as that of Mr. Leiper going to your City, I should think myself neglectful of the duty incumbent on me to perform were I to omit writing, to make my respectful Congratulations on the very high honor Shewn you by your fellow Citizens in placing you in so dignified a Station as the Presidental Chair. But I have my concerns for this, and cannot but take the liberty of expressing my uneasiness, that the Business of the Office may be too fatiguing for your health. Pennsylvania has too many weighty concerns to be imposed for adjustment on one who from a long Series of hard Service ought to be exempted from Labor, that he might enjoy uninterrupted the Evening of Life, in calm domestic quiet. But acquiesing with your superior judgement, will think, will hope it is right, and cease to importune you any more on the Subject.

I could wish to know what kind of Types you have coming. Whether high or low Letter, and the names of the Founts. With the most perfect Regard I have the honor to be, Honored Sir, Your Very Humble Servant.
