Childs, Francis (1763-1830?)

Pioneer in the publishing of daily newspapers in America.

Sought and, after more than a year, obtained Franklin’s aid in setting up a press, although he was less than prompt in repaying this aid.

Initially alone (1785-89) and later in partnership with John Swaine (1789-94), operated printing offices in New York (1785-96) and Philadelphia (1791-94).

Public printer in New York from 1790. Did work for the United States government from his Philadelphia office.

Born in Philadelphia. Acquainted with John Jay.
