From Francis Childs (unpublished)

Dear Sir

On the 27th of the present month another period will expire at which you should recive a considerable payment from me. I know not Sir how I shall apologize for the disappointments you have already experienced. It would have been better for me, I believe, had I not been so sanguine in my expectations of being able to be punctual, and thereby to have gained a longer credit which you appeared willing to allow in the extension of your good offices to me. If it were possible to turn to cash, advantageously, what property I expect soon to possess, I could easily redeem my obligation without inconvenience, but I must now rely on your goodness, and if it should not be too great a trespass on your past indulgence, I should wish to attend you in Philadelphia, and make settlement of the account pay what I can, and renew an obligation for the arrear’s, of which obligation I can assure the punctual payment at the time to be stipulated. I have wrote to B. F. Bache, informing him of my expectations of money in the hands of Mr. Pritchard, in a few days, when I shall order him payment of his account. There are yet Sir some sorts wanting to render useful a very great part of the Brevier and Long Primer, of this I took the liberty to write you some time since, but have not yet been honored with a reply. I am fearful it never came to hand. The Brevier wants one pound of Roman lower case v’s. and the Long primer 3 lb. spaces, and some other sorts, of which I will forward a list; if they can be cast for me. With a due impression of your friendship, I am respectfully Your Humble Servant

Francis Childs
