To César-Henri, Comte de la Luzerne (unpublished)
Philada. Oct. 7. 1787.
Sir,

The Person who will have the Honour of presenting this Line to your Excellency is Capt. John Earle, who was instrumental in Saving Part of the Cargo of the French Ship les Bons Enfans, and in bringing safely to this Port her Officers and Crew. A Dispute having arisen here between him and Capt. Guichet of the said Ship, concerning the Salvage, which tho’ decided and settled by a Suit at law and an Arbitration he apprehends may be misrepresented to his Disadvantage in your Island, he therefore requests from me a Recommendation to your Excellency’s Protection and Favour as far as he may be found to merit them. This I give the more readily, as he bears here the Character of a worthy honest Man, and I am persuaded that on fair and Candid Examination he Conduct will appear conformable to that Character. With great Respect, I am, Your Excellency’s most obedient and most humble Servant
