From Francis Childs (unpublished)
New York, April 3d. 1787
Dear Sir

It is some time since I did myself the honor of addressing you. I do not do it now with that pleasure which would result from a knowledge of having fully Satisfied my engagements. But confiding on that particular Friendship which I have experienced, I flatter myself that a candid confession of my inability to have complied, will relieve me from any unfortunate impressions that may have originated in disappointment.

I am convinced that you will with pleasure receive the information that my Paper is one of the best established in N.Y. and that in the process of a Little time, I shall be fully enabled to make good all your expectations.

It has been a great misfortune that the Letter has been so imperfect. Upon a review of some of the Founts, I find still a considerable deficiency of some sorts. This is owing partly to my not taking an accurate list of the Imperfections at first, partly to the imposibility of knowing at that time what they were, and partly to some mistakes which have arisen in the casting of them. (I am sorry this has happened, as it will no doubt be attended with trouble). The deficiency of some sorts are so great, as you’l perceive by the inclosed List, that a large quantity of Letter remains useless.

The Petit Cannon I have very Little use for, and as you may very probably have an opportunity of disposing of it, I will send it the first opportunity, if agreeable. At the time of casting the Imperfections, if it should not be attended with much inconvenience or expence, I would be glad if there could be a new punch made for Lower case W’s To the Cicero. Those in use have an appearance so antiquated, that most people who require any work done on a Type of that size which is in every other respect handsome, object to it.

Fully sensible of the trouble you take and the interest you manifest in my prosperity, I regret that you are importuned with Business [of] such trifling import as the present.

With a grateful acknowledgment of Your generosity I am Dear sir Respectfully Your humble Servant

Francis Childs
