From William Carmichael (unpublished)
Madrid 4th April 1785
Dear Sir

I had the honor to address you on the 29th Ulto. since which I have received your Letter of the 22d. March. I have had no ulterreur Advice from Morrocco. The Cadiz Post having this day been detained by the business of the weather. As soon as I shall receive any intelligence from that quarter which may be worth your notice, I shall not fail to Communicate it. I have reason to think that this Court is about to send an Ambassador Extraordinary to the Emperor of Morrocco with presents and that the Nephew of the Ct de Florida Blanca is to be charged with this Commission. The preparations for an expedition of some kind against Algiers continue. It is said the Negotiations for peace with those Pirates have proved unsuccessfull. I am sorry to inform you that Mr. Hartwell is dead of a consumption and dead at a moment when he would certainly have had his entire Liberty.

I this day send you by the Prince Czatoriski the work of Bager. While at Paris, I had directed it to be sent me, and the Ct de Gerssdorf charged himself with the Delivery of it, But having altered at Bourdeaux his intentions of passing thro’ Paris, He carried it with him to Saxony, where I suppose it will remain. I shall inclose my accounts and send them to Mr. Grand and at the Same time Draw for what may be due to me. If at your Departure from Paris, you should happen to have a bust of the Many that have been made of you, I shall regard it as a particular mark of your Esteem, if you would leave it at my disposition. I wish to know whether you have ever written to the Ct de Compomanes since I had the honor to send you a Letter from him. His friendship for me is still the same. Should you obtain the permission you seem to expect, I hope that your voyage may be as happy as ought to be sincere the joy of our Country men at your Arrival, I am impatient to know whether Congress hath at length done that justice to my Namesake which his Services and capacity entitle him to I have the honor to be Dear Sir With the highest respect and Affection Your Excellency’s Most Obliged and Humble Servant

Wm. Carmichael
