From Francis Childs (unpublished)
New York April 28th 1786.
Dear Sir

I had the honor to receiving yours of the 22d inclosing a Specimen of the propertion of God (j) used in French and English composition. There can be no possible mistake respecting the sorts that are missing, as the whole of the Letter has been put into Cases. The Letter (c) is very deficient in all the founts and we shall want nearly double the number we now have. The Letter (u) in the Petite Lomain is much wanted also, and the Petite Texte wants Lower case Roman /p/u/ /c/ with all the small Capitals. The Cicero /c/u/ figures and small Cipatals are also wanting. The Augustine wants Lower case /c/u/. And the Cicero and Augustine both want the two line Letters. The Gros Romain cant well be Judged of, as I expect a great part of this fount missing. The Petit paragen wants the Lowe case /y/ Roman and Italic. The Gros Paragen is also defective in several sorts. In the Petite Cannon /y / are wanting to the Roman and Italic, and the Gros Cannon the same which render these founts useless. These are the most of the imperfections that can be discovered at present. The Lower Case /e and h/ and some others, to all the founts, are too numerous, and so much money lost to me. The Cicero and Augustine are so near alike that they have produced many inconveniencies in the office, and in consequence I have laid by the Augustine. Perhaps it may equally answer you, to exchange the Augustine for the Philosophic. Value for Value the few pages of this Philosophic which are here was in one of the unfortunate boxes, and intirely mixed with the other Letter, all in

But I have it now set up, and in case you do not conclude to exchange the Letter as I have mentioned it shall be forwarded the first conveyance after the receipt of your answer.

With respect to the weight of the Letter here I cannot yet give any particular account, having neglected to weigh any (except the Pet. Rom.) because from the want of sorts. I knew it could not be weight the Pet. Rom. when weighed previous to the arrival of the last box, wanted near 200 lb. which I suppose to be the weight of the said last box.

Thus, hastily, I have given you an account to the best of my knowledge, of what is wanting at present, but intend to do it fully when a little more at leisure.

Ever since my return from Philadelphia I have been in confusion in the office with the Types. Much thronged with business. Therefore could not pay that attention which I wished.

I have read the Little pamphlet on which you marked the j’s with much pleasure, and intend publishing it in the paper.

I hope you will excuse the appearance of this as I have not time to make a fair Copy, and believe that I am Dear Sir with every sentiment of esteem Your obliged and grateful Servant

Francis Childs
