From J. P. Malcom (unpublished)
Monday morning March 26th. 1787
Sir

Can you excuse the presumption of a Person who perhaps you never heard of before addressing you? I am the Grand Son of a Mr. James Peller of this City whom you once honoured with your acquaintance and having been brought up to Engraving I have as the Arts are at a very low Ebb here thought that perhaps if I undertook a Print of the Genius of America represented as a youth led by Liberty to her Temple in which is seen in Perspective a Statue of Genl. Washington while Envy in a dark Corner of the Picture is gnawing a Heart and endeavouring in vain to hurt the reputation of these our rising States it might succeed especially if your Excellency would condescend to permit me to dedicate it to you who have borne so distinguished a part in the happy revolution. I have enclosed a Specimen of my abilities and should it meet with approbation I shall entreat your Excell. to send a Line directed to your Excellencys most obedient humble Servant
