Acknowledgments of Poetic Offerings to Franklin (I)
Passy, [blank]
Monsieur,

I am thrilled for my country that it has excited so much interest among the warriors of Europe, to have drawn so many to her defense; I thank you in particular, Monsieur, for your good intentions towards America, and I receive with gratitude the verses that you kindly send me, but unfortunately I am not fluent enough in French to appreciate their full worth. I hope that you will soon be delivered from the difficulties that you are experiencing, and I am, Monsieur, your very humble and obedient servant
