From the Comtesse d’Houdetot (unpublished)
Sannois, 8 June 1783

You promised me, my dear and venerable Doctor, a little visit to Sannois. Now is the time to refresh your memory. Our valley and my garden are at the peak of their beauty, and all our flowers call you if it were possible for you to come Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week. Remember that you promised to be entirely my guest and live under my roof. Nowhere would it be a greater honor and greater pleasure to see you than there. Your coming will be one more monument to embellish and honor my little country retreat where I keep, carefully, the memory all that has won my admiration and touched my heart. You are so very worthy, my dear Doctor, of this special status. Please reply to my brother who will see you [Tuesday]. I hope that you and your grandson will come. I beg him to accept both my invitation and my compliments. Please be assured, my dear Doctor, of my tender attachment.

Comtesse d'Houdetot

If my brother did not have the honor of handing you this letter himself, I would beg you to send your answer to my home in Paris as soon as possible and, if you can, Thursday morning.
