From Le Roy
At the Galleries of the Louvre, February 18, 1779

Allow me, my illustrious colleague, to recommend Monsieur Panier, who will have the honor of giving you this letter. He is a very able turner and also quite skilled in all the arts which relate to turnery. He is the most able press maker for printing presses that we have. He heard that you needed press makers in America, and from this he decided to go there. As no one is better informed than you about what is happening in that part of the world, I thought that you would forgive me, in the midst of your great activities, for sending him to you so that you could either deter him from his plan if what he heard was untrue, or favor him with a recommendation for America if you believe that he would be a useful artisan there, and that he could be advantageously employed. As I do not rely solely on my own knowledge in these matters, you will find enclosed a certificate from my neighbor, M. Cochin, the famous engraver whose reputation you surely know.

M. de la Blancherie, my illustrious doctor, has changed the day of his meetings to Thursday. Therefore there will be one today; you would bring him great pleasure if you were dining in Paris and you wished to come this afternoon. I would be there to have the pleasure of seeing you, and I would even talk to you about something which I cannot write here. I await your orders so that we can nominate a deputation to congratulate you on being named Plenipotentiary Minister of the United States of America. Adieu, my illustrious doctor, you know how much I am passionately attached to you for life
