From Barbeu-Dubourg
Paris September 8, 1777
My dear Master

I would be much obliged if you would write a letter of recommendation to one of the leaders of your army for a young man full of courage and quite distinguished talents, who is in Bordeaux and ready to embark for America, where he plans on settling in Pennsylvania, after serving as a volunteer or otherwise for as long as the war lasts. His name is Gerard. He brings with him a little capital, sufficient for a few years, and if he gets used to the country, his father will then pass on to him his inheritance. I am particularly interested in him, because he is the brother-in-law of one of our most honest contractors. I have the honor of wishing you good day, and of reiterating the assurance of my inviolable attachment

Dubourg
