From Madame Brillon
20 [September 1778] at Anet

Wednesday you will have tea without me, Saturday you will have it with me; if that idea gives you one hundredth part of the pleasure it gives me, you must be very happy, my papa. There comes a point, they say, beyond which friendship cannot increase. I believe it, and I think my friendship for you has reached this point. And yet, it seems that I love you more with every day that passes; I think it is simply because every day I have been loving you for one more day. We shall go into this question Saturday, oh my dear papa, Saturday, how happy I will be! I have the honor to be, with the most respectful and tender affection, your very humble and very obedient servant
