From Pierre-Gabriel Bouffé, Gabriel Bouffé, and Louis-Guillaume le Veillard
Paris, May 12, 1778.

Two individuals would like to acquire one or several plots of land in the Province of Pennsylvania, each for a sum of twelve thousand French livres, together making twenty-four thousand livres,

twelve thousand of which would be for and in the name of Gabriel Bouffé of Paris,

twelve thousand of which would be for and in the name of Pierre Gabriel Bouffé of Paris.

The said gentlemen would like for the above plots to be of fertile and easily cultivated land, principally for tobacco and otherwise for grain and pasturing. It would be desirable as well that they be near navigable rivers and also near Philadelphia, so that the export of local products would be more simple and less costly.

For the rest, they will be content to defer to the intelligence and local knowledge of whomever Monsieur Franklin so chooses to employ for these various matters.

The quantity of land cannot be specified because this will depend on the price attached to the land. Furthermore, it is essential that all plots be near navigable rivers, and that no single tract of land have an area so great that the costs of development of its extremities would be too considerable. A third party would also like to acquire a single plot of land for the sum of twelve hundred livres or thereabouts. He wishes for his property to be as close as possible to those of MM. Bouffé as well as to Philadelphia on the Delaware bank, and if possible, for it to be crossed by a stream capable of turning a mill. The title of this property will be in the name of Louis Guillaume Le Veillard, Gentleman Esquire of the King of France. It is important that the deeds of these various acquisitions be drawn up with all the necessary formalities, indicating the borders and characteristics of the plots of each party so that they be easily recognized. Each party should have his contract or contracts absolutely independently of the others, but the various properties should be as close as possible to each other in order to facilitate general inspection. It is requested to proceed as soon as possible with these acquisitions, for which, according to custom, the entirety of the funds in question will be delivered directly to the person indicated by Doctor Franklin. But if the funds of the said parties have not been received at the moment of purchase, the full or partial sum may be withdrawn immediately at the best possible exchange from MM. Bouffé Father and Sons, Bankers of Paris, for the most suitable term. It is assured that these deeds will be accepted exactly upon the first notice which is given them, as concerns both Mr. Le Veillard and MM. Bouffé.

We will have the greatest obligation to M. Doctor Franklin for kindly arranging for the execution of our intentions written here, giving him all authority in this matter.
