“Il s’était formé chez nous une Societé pour travailler a détruire l’esclavage des Négres et, en attendant à rendre leur sort plus doux. J’ai à vous demander comment on pourrait faire pour contribuer à cette bonne oeuvre.

“Cette Lettre vous parviendra par le Vaisseau qui vous porte le Réglement pour la Commerce de notre pays avec le vôtre. Je compte que ce Réglement aura votre Approbation, et que vous le trouverez dans les principes de liberté auxquelles nous sommes dévoués. On n’a pas pu le faire aussi parfait qu’on l’avait désiré; mais les deux articles en suspens seront retravaillées, et je l’espére avec succés.”

B.F. finds by an old Pamphlet in his Possession, that George Keith preceded Ralph Sandiford more than 30 Years in writing against the perpetual Slavery of the Negroes. There was a Paper of his concerning them, said to be “given forth by the Appointment of the Meeting held by him at Philip James’s House in the City of Philadelphia about the Year 1693” wherein a strict Charge was given to Friends that they should set their Negroes at Liberty after some reasonable time of Service, etc etc. May 14. 88
