If the use of this Language, the French and Spanish’s, joined to the Practice of a general Trade for above Thirty Years, are worth Your Excellency’s Notice, and may answe either His private Views, or those concerning the Service of the United States of America, I take the Liberty to offer the same to Him, with some confidence that Principles that honour the Man, and a long Experience of treating with the several Nations above expressed by their Languages, wou’d put me in a Situation of becoming useful, specially in peaceable Time, when the Trade of said States will soar up and shall deserve to be made known in all it’s individual Branches in order to promote it’s Extention as far as it will be liable thereof.
Under the Prospect, a Consulship wou’d furnish me the opportunity to serve the States; and the more the Place that might be assigned to me shou’d be trading, the more I shou’d have Room to Stretch my Endeavours to attract there a greater quantity of North America Products.
Your Excellency will see if, in that Respect, or any other, my services are acceptable either now, or hereafter.
I lived Three Years in England, Eighteen in Spain, and nine in this Town.
My Country is Switzerland; and namely the Canton of Berne. According to Custom, I shou’d, perhaps, avail myself oa a prevailing Recommendation with Your Excellency to give some weight to my Offers; but that Expedient is Strange to me. I presume in case of need, that it will be sufficient to furnish to Your Excellency some other Means of judging of me than those of ~y2 Protection. I have the Honour to be with the most distinguished Respect Your Excellency, Most humble and most obedient Servant
