From La Rochefoucauld
This Monday morning [February 3, 1777]

I received this morning the attached letter, the existence of which I believed, Monsieur, that it would be good that you should be informed, although you may have already learned some of its contents at Versailles. If I had known your address at Versailles, I would have sent it to you immediately; I entrust it, along with my letter, to one of your gentlemen who promises me to give it to you, if you come back tonight, or to hold it for you, if you do not return. I pray you to not show it to anyone, and to give it back to me when you return. If I learn any news from M. du Coudrai, M. le Blond, I will be honored to transmit it right away. Please accept, I entreat you, my wishes for America, and the homage of the esteem and attachment with which I have the honor of being, Monsieur, Your very humble and obedient servant

Le Duc de la Rochefoucauld
