Your favour of the 23d. of last Month I duly recd. The manner in which you have latterly employed your time, will, I make no doubt, be serviceable to you in your Profession: But, as you well observe, the speaking of a Language is only to be well attained in the Country were spoke. Your project therefore of going to Cadiz, is in my Opinion, very wise. I have spoke to my Grandfather, relative to your request of a Pass, or Certificate of your being an American subject, in order to facilitate your travelling in Spain. This he is willing to comply with, provided you take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America: Inclosed you have a Copy of sd. Oath & a Letter to Mr. Bondfield requesting & empowering him to administer it to you. As you intend yourself for an American Subject, I see nothing to prevent your complying with this Formality. As soon as you or Mr. Bondfield, informs my Grandfather of your having taken the Oath, a Certificate & Pass-port shall be immediately forwarded.
I received the order for the three hundred & sixty Livres I had advanced on your Account which was duly paid. I imagine this to be the same as mentioned in your Letter; & I am sorry I did not before acknowledge the Reception of it.
My Grandfather joins his best Wishes for your Welfare with those of Your ever affectionate friend
