I have the honour to be commissioned in the army of the united States, as captain in the 1st. South Carolina Regt., Colonel Tho: Cotesworth Pinckney, on the continental Establishement. I been forced to come back in my country, at the death of my Father, and I departed from Charles-Town, (by Furlough) and with my Lieutenants commission, which I am master of, in order to settle my affairs. All is done now, and I am desirous to go rejoin my corps as Soon as possible. I beg your Excellency to favour my with an order of passage, in Commodore Paul Jones’s Ship which lies now at Lorient (I heard that this Ship is soon going out to america) or in any one of the america vessels which are in Painsboefus harbour.
