The Memorial of James Nassau Colleton Sheweth,

That your Excellency’s Memorialist is descended from one of the first Proprietors of the Province of South Carolina, who had large Possessions in that Country, and that the Reversion of an Estate called Watboo Barony in Berkeley County on Cowper River in that Province, was left to your Excellency’s Memorialist, but as he never has had the Possession of it, he could take no measures in regard to it himself, but in consideration of its being the whole dependance of your Memorialist and his Family, Mr Colleton the present Possessor to whom it was bequeathed by Family settlement with the Reversion to your Memorialist, is willing to make over all his Right to it, provided the Assembly of South Carolina will grant your Memorialist Possession and permit him to reside on it, which is the ardent wish of your Excellency’s Memoralist, and has been ever since he had any Idea of becoming a landed Proprietor of that Country; and your Memorialist hopes the Justice and humanity of the Assembly will not refuse him this favour, particularly as your Memorialist has never been in any manner inimical to their Cause though he could be of no assist[ance] to it, not having had the actual Possession of any thing in that Country, and the moment he now has the prospect of it, entertains the greatest desire to become a Resident there. Your Memorialist therefo[re] prays your Excellency’s favourable representation of his Case to Congress and the Assembly of South Carolina in order that he may repair thither and take Possession of his Estate.
