I have scarce time to acknowlege rect. of yours of Ulto. & thank you for the contents—being in a hurry to announce a Peice of Good News to you just recd. by Cap: Robertson who left Philad. the 12 July. He tells me that General Clinton having been encouraged on his return to N.Y. to make an excursion into the Jersies, undertook it the latter end of June, & being made beleive that the People had much altered in their political opinions from his success to the Southwd. he penetrated rather too far. The Militia behaved with their usual alacrity & Spirit. They flocked to Gen. Washington who obliged Clinton to retreat to N. York in the greatest confusion leaving many killd & Prisoners.
Cap. Robertson has Papers on board. but the Post going to Night prevents my learning particulars. He informs me that they had recd. intelligence at Philad. and that M. de Ternay was arrived safe at R. Island.
With respectfull Complimts. to your Grand Father I am allways DSir Your Affect. & Obliged Servt.
