I have received your Favour of the 27th Inst. informing me that the first Bills N 66 for 18 Dollars N 92 for 120 D & N 69 for 60 D were presented and that the thirds of these Bills had been accepted 24th Feb. & returned to me.— The mistake arose thus. Mr Jona Jackson sent the first Bills by Mr Cordis, & least he should be taken he sent the others to me. Hearing that Mr Cordis was taken & concluding of course that the first Bills were lost, I sent these for acceptance that the Time might not be lost, but determined not to negociate them ’till I was sure of Mr Cordis’s Capture.— I soon had a positive account of it, & was about remitting the Bills to Mr Grand, when I discovered that Mr Jackson had not made them payable to me, which of course destroyed the validity of my Indorsement, I therefore concluded to keep the Bills ’till I could hear from Mr Cordis, and I wrote to London accordingly. As I now find by your Letter that Mr Cordis did not lose the first Bills but has negociated them, I return the thirds enclosed which you are welcome to destroy, and please to note it in your Bill Book accordingly.— This done, I beg you will see due done to those presented to you from Mr Hodshon, and if there has yet been any difficulty please to show this Letter in Explanation of it. I am Yours sincerely & affectionately
