Dunkurque Decembr. 15th. 1780
Sir:

I wrote you a letter Acquainting you with my Situation dated the 14th Inst. But fearing something might Stop the letter I thought best to write by the Bearrer Mr. Hemmenway; I was taken in a Prise Brig Call’d the Burke Bosch from Liverpool bound to Leghorn Captur’d by John Paul Jones Esqr. in the Continental frigate Alliance we saild the 27th. Decembr. last from the Texel I had on board as a Passenger Col Conall Wybert when I was taken and when I was Carried to Portsmouth I found Means to give them the Slip and got to flushing and Travelled to this place and being Destitute of money and not Knowing any Person here Which Obliges me to beg your Assistance and as I was In the Service of the Congress I hope you will be pleased to Order me as much money as will at least Replace the cloaths and Navigation Books and Instruments which I have lost I shall wait your Answer And am with Respect Your Most Obedient and most Humble Servant
