From Madame Brillon
Saturday 13 [November, 1779] at La Thuillerie

I will write you only a word today, my good papa; I have several things to do that cannot be dispensed with, and that are no doubt less pleasant than chatting with you. But duty above all, or I would not be the deserving daughter of my papa.

Dare I remind you once more that you promised to write to me, that it has been 16 days since I left and I have not yet had news of you, that I must go at least 12 days more without the hope of seeing you! You have not forgotten me; one of your chief traits is justice, and you would cease to be just if you did not love me a little, even if it were only to acknowledge the respectful and tender feeling that binds me to you for life. Farewell, my friend, my good papa; believe that it is always with regret that I leave you, or stop devoting my time to you.

Maman, brother and children present you with their respects. With your permission we present a thousand compliments to Monsieur your [grand]son.

Addressed: To / Monsieur / Monsieur le Docteur Franklin / At Passy near Paris
