From the Abbé Andre Morellet (unpublished)
Monday
Dear and respectable friend,

You promised that you would give me a day to dine at my home with M. le chevalier de Chastellux. You owe this accommodation (for it is one) to his friendship, to mine, and to the wishes of all my small family. You must absolutely give me Saturday or Monday of next week and inform me of your answer tomorrow morning when you come to Paris, or even before then if possible. Consult your dear son, who knows better than you if you are free or not, for you see that after having freed yourself and your entire country from British tyranny you still must put up with the tyrannies that French indiscretion imposes upon you. I will send you tomorrow, at M. de Maillebois’, the copy of the translation of milord’s speech that you will use as you see fit. If you have not been able to answer me earlier regarding the choice of the day, please give your answer to the carrier who will remit this paper to you. I do not need to mention that if the amusements of M. Franklin son are taking him to some ballet on that day and prevent him from coming with you he will cause us mortal grief. Please accept the assurance of my tender and respectful affection for life

L’Abbé Morellet

All considered I am sending an express in order to get your response immediately. Choose between Saturday and Monday.
