Jean-Baptiste Le Roy to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Paris, rue de Levis, February 18

Please allow me, Monsieur, to ask you a favor, if it does not trouble you. A friend of mine from the north has an interest in a company in his country which does considerable business; he would very much like to know if there is free trade in the United States of North America. He has given me, for this purpose, a small number of points, about which he would like to be informed. I have the honor of sending them to you, copied across half the page, so that if possible, you would be so good as to reply. I would be truly obliged, because he is an excellent man, to whom I would be enchanted to render this service with your help.

I have the honor of being, Monsieur, with the most distinguished sentiments of esteem and attachment Your very humble and obedient servant

Le Roy of the Acad. of Sci.

Please, Monsieur, pass on my regards to your Minister Grand Pappa. Attached is a letter which I ask you to have sent to America when you have the chance. Do you have copies of your Treaty of Commerce with us, dated November 1, 1778, and could you give one of them to a friend, or must one go to the Royal Press in order to have one? Allow me, Monsieur, to add this little note, as it seems that it could excuse my request in your eyes; since what I am asking you for would only increase competition in favor of America, and consequently permit her to obtain European products at a better price, in doing me this favor, you would be serving her interests
Notation: Le Roy Feb. 18, 1783
