William Carmichael to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
St. Ildefonso 21st Septr 1781
Dear Sir

I observe by a postscript to Doctor Franklins Letter of the 24th Ulto. that you had not received a Letter which I wrote in answer to your obliging favor of the 27th of July and sent by the Embassadors Courier some days after the reception of yours. In that Letter I inclosed the Madrid Gazettes for your Grandfather and am surprized that you have not received it from the Ct. de Vergennes Bureau. This will be delivered you by Major Franks, whom I recommend to your Notice and particular civilities not only as a worthy honest active officer, but for reasons which I am going to mention. Your Grandfathers Enemies yours and mine, have endeavored to injure you all in their Power in the Circles which they frequent at Philadelphia. The unfavorable impressions and prejudices conceived hastily in the Capital extend to the Provinces and altho’ interiorly we may despise malevolent and injust calumnies, we owe to ourselves every honest endeavor ever to remove them. The Major is received favorably in all the polite Circles in Philadelphia and is generally known in every State of the Union and equally so in the Army. I give you this hint, because I own I wish to make him, as Lord Chesterfiels expresses it your Puff—you will pardon the freedom of this advice, which proceeds from answer to some Letters I wrote to some of my friends on your Acct. I know not what Congress has done in consequence of your Grandfathers Letters with respect to you, but I am infinitely pleased at the Dissappointment of our Common Enemies. I am informed that their Venom has lost much of its force and if A.L. does not succeed in being appointed Secretary of Foreign Affairs, all his ambitions and revengefull prospects will be blasted. Mr Adams reserve must be at an end for your Grandfather has now the same Commission as himself and I hope you will accompany him, whenever serious Negotiations shall take place. I know not yet Mr Jays determinati
