George Fox to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
St. Florentin July 28. 1781.

I am not a little surprised, my dear Temple, that you should remain ignorant of my intention of visiting Holland, as if I have not mentioned it to you, it was owing to a persuasion of my having already informed you. But since I have been guilty of that piece of neglect, I must beg you that you will excuse me, & at the same time, acquaint you that it is une chose decidèe & that the time of my departure will be shortly after my Arrival in Paris & of consequence in a very little time. Your obliging offer of letters to that part of the World I accept with pleasure, and be assured that I shall ever esteem it as a further proof of that friendship, which you have shewn me from the commencement of our acquaintance.

Foulke you tell me has an intention of returning to America soon, whether or not his occupations prevent his writing me, is a question which I cannot decide, altho’ I would willingly suppose it as an excuse in his favor. Mayo, I find, is at present at Hotel de l’Empereur—This change of lodgings I should have attributed to his Virginian disposition, had he not acquainted me with the, at least, suspicious conduct of the Master of the House where he before lodged. His eyes he informs me continue in status quo, & he does not as yet seem certain of his travels to the Northward. I will beg you to make him my Compliments, and Foulke also tho he seems to have forgot me. I was prevented from writing you by the last post as I dined and supped out, and at present a large company which we have had to dinner deprives me of the Pleasure of writing you more fully. You will therefore make my most respectful Compliments to your Grandfather & believe me to be as ever Yours affectionately

Geo: Fox
