From the Chevalier de la Luzerne (unpublished)
Paris the 23d. of March 1785.
Sir

Permit me to introduce to Your Excellency’s acquaintance Messrs. Joseph Combes and d’Ejean who will do themselves the honor to present you this Letter. They are considerable Merchants of the City of Agde in Languedoc and intend to establish in America a house of Commerce to correspond with their native Country. An exchange of the produce and manufactures of Languedoc will certainly become profitable for both Countries and Your Excellency’s Patriotism and good intentions towards our nation are too well Known as to doubt of the kind reception and support you will honour with these two Gentlemen. They are entirely Strangers in your Country and your advice will be of the greatest importance for them. I shall be very thankful for the protection you will be pleased to grant them and be happy in an opportunity to convince you of my gratitude and of the sentiments of respect and attachement with which I have the honor to be Sir Your Excellency’s, very obedient and most humble servant,

de la luzerne

His Excellency the President of the State of Pensylvania.
