Thomas Mifflin and Benhamin Franklin to Josiah Harmar (unpublished)
Philada. 12th Sept 1787.
Dear Harmar

Young Melcher pays you a visit in Consequence of the Opinions of his best Friends & particularly mine.

He is a Lad of Honor & Integrity; but wants prudence—and is too often led into Errors by an idle & useless Sett of Acquaintance which he finds it not easy to shake off.

I was named his Guardian—This has interested me much for him & induced me to advise him to seek for an Employment in One of your Companies. If you can enter him as a Volunteer & give him an Occasion of behaving well I have Reason to believe he will do Justice to your Attention & Kindness—The President & Vice President at my Request have been so obliging as to promise to give him introductory Letters to you; which will be additional Obligations to behave well—

I entreat you to be kind to him for my Sake & believe me Your Friend

Tho Mifflin

Brigadier Genl Harmar
