From Andrew Ellicott (unpublished)
New York August 6th 1789
Dear Sir

There is now a Bill for the appointment of a Geographer for the United States, and Surveyor General for the Western Territory before Congress.

I have made application for that Office, and as my dependance rests principally upon the recommendation of Gentlemen of known scientific abilities, I feel myself under the necessity of requesting the favour of a Letter from you to the President of the United States on that subject.

I am told there is no time to be lost. Your compliance will confer a particular favour on your Humble Servant and real Friend

Andrew Ellicott

p.s. Please to direct to me under cover to the Honourable Thomas Scott Esq.
Endorsed: His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esq. L. L. D. Philadelphia.
