Gurdon S. Mumford to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes 5th. Mar. 1782
Sir,

I hope the Occasion of my not informing you sooner of the steps taken towards recovering the money you lent Capt. Robeson will afford some excuse for the delay. Directly on my arrival here I sent him the Letter you put in my charge for him, soon after I presented the bill when he told me it should be honored in a day or two, the appointed time past no pay & so on repeatedly, finally after so many repeated applications & dunn’d so often he accepted the bill, & though it was at sight I should have been put off almost as long since Acceptance as before, when the fellow will pay it I am not able to say but you may be assured no exertions shall be wanting in endeavouring to recover your Money. Any way you may please to point out what you think may be the means of making him pay it shall be faithfully complied with so far as it may lay in my Power.—

If in any other Affair I can be of Service to you please to Command me freely, thereby I shall always consider myself greatly honor’d—May I ask the Favor of you to make my kind Regards as well as thankful Acknowledgements acceptable to your good Grandfather, with best Compliments to Mr. de lamotte & accept for yourself my best wishes for your Health, Happiness, & Prosperity.—

G. S. Mumford

Pray excuse this scrawl as I have not at present time to Copy it fair—& I hope you will also pardon my long silence
