From James Rumsey (unpublished)
London augst. 10th 1788.
Dear Sir,

I have to return you many thanks for your kind letter introduceing me to Mr. Vaughan, It has raised me up a most Sincere and Able freind in that Gentleman, he has Served me most essentially in many respects, Especially in his good Council to me in letters while I was at birmingham endeavoring to form a conection with Messrs. Balton & Watt, who has made me proposials that would have been Dishonourable of me to Except. These proposials, my Answer to them, and a Very philosophial letter from Mr. Vaughan to me, on the Subject of my boiler, which I inclosed to Bolton and Watt, (by Mr. Vaughan’s Consent,) I have forwarded to the Society for their consideration.

There is not a doubt but a large Sum of money might be made in this Country if I had the prevelige of Erecting Boats to go by Steam without Interfereing with Messrs. Bolton & Watt’s patent previliges, Or could form a conection with them on reasonable terms. My boiler I have Improved much, and all the great philosophical Charectors that has seen the plan are of opinion that it must far Exceed any thing of the kind yet Extent. I have been very uneasey about the promis I made you, as my Jurney to this Countrey So Sudent and unexpectedly, has put it out of my power to observe it in that punktual mannor that I wish, and your freindship Commands; but if you can beleive me Sir, I Shall most Strictly Compply with it, at the Earlyest opertunity that it is in my power, Should any Calls be made upon you in my absence contrary to my Engagements. I have Sir the honor to be with Every Sentiment of Sincere Esteem your much obliged freind and Obedient humble Servant

James Rumsey
