From James Hill (unpublished)
London June 4th. 1784
Sir

This Address I hope may Arrive Safe to your Hand, and at some Vacant Hour, or Moment, Honord with Attention. Under the Persuance I am Addressing a Gentleman, Whose Character in Private, is Most Respected: And Public Illustrious. Animates Me with the Hope, This Application, made with the Utmost Deference, and Respect, will not prove Abortive. And from Whence this Originates, will now take the Liberty Sir of laying before you. The late Quixotian Contest, on the Part of this Unhappy Country with America—Or with all the World Combin’d, Sensible of their pro    —Or Chose to Assist in Humbling a People, vainly Confiding in the Strength of Their Arm. In Opposition to True Political Knowledge And the Dictates of Morality &c. The Language of Whose Conduct, till very Recently, Has Savor’d Strongly of Frenzy, and Despair, The Consequences of which, Thro a Declension of Employ, has involv’d Me in no Small Difficulty. To Remedy which, as far as My Poor Abilities permit, I have made some Small Addition, to my First Profession, And for a Time past have been Known, by Making, and Vending, what is Understood in London, by Hair Lockets, Fancies &c. Now Sir I have long Entertaind a Design, of Intreating, the Acceptance of the Compte D’Artois, of one of these Ornaments, as a Handkerchief Locket For His Princess. Which is Begun, and Will contain, an Allegorical Representation of the Late Relative Situations, of the Respective Countries, (Set in Pearl and Enamel) France America and Britain. My Motive You will perceive Sir in This is certainly Interested, ’tho Respectful, and Has for Object, Thro Your Medium Sir to Sollicit That Prince, The Honor and Permission, of Distinguishing Me. (Comme en Angleterre) as Hair Worker &c to Him, by Placing the Arms of France over My Door &c. Such a Mark of Favor from This August Personage, could not Fail of pointing Me out to My Countrymen, as Something Eccentric. Thus having a Penchant for His Taste. But it is certainly needless, to Digress a     on this Head, to a Gentleman, so Conversant in the Knowledge of Mankind, whose Benefit may accrue from Such an Acquisition, ’Tho it certainly Confers not one Single Iota, of Merit, on the Man who may have it, yet I trust Sir the Draing as far as this Style permits, will be Tolerably Correct And That the Allegory has Truth for its Basis, is I believe, pretty well Ascertain’d. You may here Sir by My address enclosd, My Situation is Centrical, but very Confin’d And the Whole Scope of My Plan, is to be Known, and Extricate Myself from My Present Obscurity. And in Order Sir that the Smallest Inconveniency may not Arise, have Suggested This, or take the Liberty to Say, If in the Space of Three Weeks, from this Date, I learn nothing Contrary to My Wishes, In the Fourth Week, propose Transmitting Under Cover Sir to Your Hotel, this Little Ornament, Unsealed, for Your Inspection &c. This Little Object However Mean in its Execution &c, is as before said Respectfully Intended, and That it is not more Richly Adorned, and fitting for the Acceptance of so Great a Personage, is not Fault of Mine. The Honor of Having it Presented by so Distinguish’d a Character, is at once so Great a Condescension to my Request, And must Infallibly procure it the   for Reception. That on this Head, I make Myself Easy. Trusting that you will view This Matter, in its proper Light, and Greatly Condescend, This Favor to An Individual (Who wants not a Character) Unknown—I take the Liberty of Subscribing Myself on Paper, What I have done a Thousand Times before Publickly and Privately Sir Your Faithful Servant

As a Proof these Last Lines contain My Sentiments Mr. Scott on Tower Hill London has a Composition of Mine for some Time past to shew American Gentlemen as a Specimen of Art which is a monumental Trophy to the memory of Those American Gentlemen who fell in the Contest in Which Sir I have not forgot You.
