From Lieutenant Dejean (unpublished)
Boston 16e. 7bre. 1786
Sir

Few days ago, I had the honor to send your Excellency two letters, one from my good protectrix comtesse De houdetot and one from M. St. John de Crevecoeur, I hope they came Safe to hand.

When I left france (Paris I Should Say) the 11th. of June last I had the promise of a commission of agent for the french navy in America; Marechall de Castries told, positively, to Duc de Chabot, that he would Send it By the first packet; but as I been deceive’d So often, I am very much afraid of the old proverb, out of sight, out of mind; if they dont send me that commission, I do not know what will become of me; I am here without money, without friends, and without any acquaintance: Ms. De Letombe, consul in this governement, has wrote to M. De La    vice consul general at new york, begs of him to employ me as agent at newlondon until Marechall De Castries pleasure is Known: I am very apprehensive, it is not in his power.

Lett me beg of your excellency, to Send me by this Gentleman, M. Phyony, the letters of recommandation, for this place, I mentiond to you in my first letter, they will be of a great Service to me, I have the honor to be with the greatest respect Sir Your most obediant and most humble Servant

Dejean Lieutenant de
frigate in the french Navy
