William Carmichael to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Madrid 20th April 1781
Dear Sir

Mr Jays courier returned to the City last night and brought me your obliging favor and the articles you were so good as to purchase for me. Receive my thanks for these proofs of your friendly attention & be assured that I shall think it a very flattering circumstance in the Course of my life If I should ever have it in my power to show my sense of your Grandfathers friendship & kind Notice of me, unknown to & unconnected as I was with him, when I first had the honor of being introduced to Him at Paris. I mention this consideration because it is nearest my heart. There are many others which I will not give your Delicacy the pain of reading. We are made happy by the Letters Mr Jay has just received from the Doctor. these and the good news from America will enable me to make with alacrity all the Copies of the Papers you have furnished & others that we shall send in a few days to America via Bilboa. I have lately written by a Mr Giusti to Dr. Franklin. He has been a long time Chargé d’affaires a Secretary of the Imperial Court at this & his conversation will amuse & instruct you. We have been on a very good footing & his conversations have furnished me with many hints that I have prosecuted to advantage. I beg you to think of something that will enable me to convince you of my sense of your kind offers in future & in the Meantime to beleive me very sincerely Your affectionate friend & Sevt.

Wm. Carmichael
