Caleb Whitefoord to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
London 30th. June 1784
Dear Sir

I embrace the Opportunity of Mr. Arbuthnot’s going to Paris, to write you a few Lines; and I need not recommend him to your Notice, as I understand he has Letters to your Grand Father from Mr. Vaughan.

From the time I was favor’d with your last Letter, it was a long while before I had an Opportunity of seeing your Father: He was then in Sussex for the Benefit of sea bathing; and before his return I went over to Flanders with my Daughter Julia: When I came back, I waited on him several times, & said every thing you wish’d me to say. He told me he shoud write you in consequence, which I make no doubt he has done: Indeed at one time he had an Intention of visiting Passy.

Some time ago, our old Friend Mr. West, having the opportunity of seeing three of the American Plenipo’s here, & wishing to transmit their Portraits to Posterity in some Historical picture, made a Sketch of the signing the Preliminary Treaty, to which I contributed a material part—by lending him the Portrait of your Grand father by Mr. Wright which I brought with me from Paris—There is only wanting (To make it compleat) a head of the Secretary to the American Commission, which Mr. West requests you will send us. A miniature will do; but it shou’d be in Colours; the attitude of the Head looking over the right Shoulder.—I have promised the Portrait of your Grand Father, when Mr. West can spare it, to Mrs. Hewson; who from her long acquaintance & great Veneration for him, I thought highly deserving of such a present—I reserve a Copy of it for myself; & have given one to Mr. Strahan.

You had once some thoughts of revisiting this Capital; pray is there any prospect of our having the pleasure of seeing you here?

I beg you’ll offer my best Respects to Dr. Franklin & believe me to be on all Occasions Dr. Sir Yours most heartily

Caleb Whitefoord

Pray remember me to the Duc de Chaulnes, when you see him; & tell him that I am now Philosophe, tout comme un autre—for I was elected unanimously F.R.S. on Thursday last.
