From Thomas Clifford (unpublished)
Philada 1st 5 Mo (May) 1789

It is with Concern I find myself under the Necessity of Acquainting the Society that no means is yet afforded to enable your Committee to Comply with their Contracts in paying for part of the Materials and workmanship of the Societys Hall so far as it was carried on—as it is now finishing and part of it for another Institution, I beg leave to query of the Gentlemen whether they have Sufficiently Considered of the propriety of that Measure while the first materials remain so long unpaid for, And beg their Attention to a matter wherein the Reputation of the Society is so materially Concerned, And that Some measure may now be adopted to put the Business in a more equitable way. I am Very Respectfully

Tho Clifford
