Peter Frederick Dobrée to the American Commissioners (unpublished)
Nantes, August 20, 1778
Honourable Gentlemen

I am extreamly sorry to have an indispensible occasion of intruding upon your occupations, but having been informed that I am accused to you as a Spy, I can not avoid taking this liberty to beg as an act of Justice that every possible enquiry may be made into this, and that my Accuser and myself may be brought face to face when I am satisfied that I shall be able to convince you of the falsehood of the accusation—for this purpose (or any other) I shall always be happy to attend upon you—and gratefully thank you for all the enquiries you will be obliging enough to make on my account.

I have the honour to be with the highest consideration most respectfully Honourable Gentlemen Your most Obedient and most humble Servant

Peter Fredk. Dobrée
