Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes May 27. 1782
My dear Billy,

I thank you for your two Favours of the 19 & 24 Inst. The affair of a Warrant for my Box may ly over ’till some come from America, I request you then to think of me.—I am obliged to you for your political Hint, [Crise?] pour un [commreçant?]. I thank you for your Intention of sending me some Paper & Ink I want both sadly. I have sent to England & when I receive it I will replace what you may let me have.—I think the subject of my particular Letter should be laid aside. I should have thought myself criminal if anything had happened and I had not told you what was said, but I think it must be groundless. I thank you for your Care of my Bills. What you say of Prisoners is not what I so often have written about. I wrote to the Doctor the 26 March of which I send you a Copy inclosed it is an answer to that Letter I want & in addition here are two or 3 more in the same situation. I have the misfortune to have been a public agent without being so now, & tho’ I have no longer the Enstruments of Ofice I keep the Name with all those who want money. For Gods Sake my dear friend send me some answer on this subject so as I may have again the Money I have advanced & know what to do in future. Pray tell the Doctor J Lee no prospect of getting a transport Ship to be ready under 2 or 3 Months Here are america, Ships enough to Carry all the Goods & they will go away with great part of their Holds empty, but none of them will go to Brest or wait for Convoy they Sail their Ships at so heavy an expence that they Say the Freight would not pay for it, besides the greater part are bound to the Northward. I am [?]
