From Alexander John Alexander (unpublished)
Queens Square London 16th Augt. 1786
Dear Sir

I cannot suffer Mrs. Hewson to leave this without Informing you we are all well and that I feel wonderfully light and happy at having finally concluded that very disagreable business I was engaged in at Paris. I sett[l]ed with the Bank and received my money a short time after you left this and it gives me great pleasure to find they are all very much satisfied with my conduct and regret now exceedingly that they left the management of my concern with them so long to a very violent acquaintance of yours at Paris.

I was very sorry to hear that you engaged again in publick business. I approve much of what I hear of General Washingtons plan to receive no pecuniary Compensation and to be concerned in no publick business. He has now got safely unto Port from which nothing should draw him and I think his conduct has been such as will make him be remembered and adored when every King and minister on this side the Atlantick will be forgotten or detested. I hope however you do not engage so deep in Business or in Politicks as to disturb your happiness or quiet and that the part you take in these is most only what is necessary to drive away the tedium Vitae which will attend a life of business and activity when followed by Idleness.

I find my Brother had the pleasure of seeing you in June. It gives me great pleasure to hear from him that you was in good Health and better than when he left Paris. I am with great respect Dear Sir Your Most Obedient Humble Servant

A: J: Alexander

I beg the favr: you will forward the Inclosed letter to my Brother my best respects to your Son
