From Jean-Baptiste-Artur de Vermonnet (unpublished)
At the Cap francois in St domingo island the 2th. of Septembre 1783.
Sir,

The Sieur Vermounet [sic] whose family has always been attached to the service of France and who has himself served twelve years three of which have been employed in the glorious defence of the liberty of the thirteen united provinces of North America during which time being employed in divers transactions he had the happiness of succeeding therein to the satisfaction of his superiors and now wishes to obtain the place of his Majesty’s Vice Consul for the United Provinces of America, having passed eight years in the study of that country he ardenty desires to live in it. The Sieur Vermounet after preparing himself to go to France to solicit the minister for his favours was (by unfortunate accidents at sea) obliged to come to St Domingo where he is now detained as well by the sickness of his familly as by the misfortunes his most necessary expences have occasioned which forces him at present to solicit your goodness to interest yourself with the Minister that he may provide for the subsistance of the Father of an unhappy familly who will never cease to offer up prayers to heaven for your preservation.

The Sieur de Vermounet who had a letter which he himself was to deliver being unhappily disappointed of that pleasure has determined to send it to you by this opportunity, and has the honour of subscribing himself, with the most profound respect, Your Excellency’s Most obedient and Most humble Servant

De Vermonnet

To His Excellence Doctor Franklin.
