George Fox to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Strasbourg May 30 1782
My dear Temple

Being just arrived in this city, I hasten to inform you that the disturbed situation of Geneva may occasion me to postpone my intended visit to that place. A regiment, it is said, is to march from here on Saturday next for that republic and there is every appearance of the resistance of its Inhabitants occasioning bloodshed. It is reported, that the Canton of Berne is lining its frontiers with troops, and that other Cantons are equally uneasy; What may be the event can only be conjectured, till time shall enable us to form a judgement. To visit that republic, at this time, might perhaps be imprudent, & as Curiosity could alone have lead me there, I must think of turning it to another object. At present I am undetermined, & I know not whether I shall pass thro some of the Swiss Cantons & go into Italy or whether I shall return into France & visit its southern provinces. A few days may determine me, & in the mean time I will proceed toward Basle as I propose leaving this City the day after tomorrow. I am afraid, my dear Friend, that you will find my scribbling tiresome, particularly as I only speak to you of projects in embryo; if I should meet with company a tour into Italy for a few weeks is not an improbable circumstance, as Curiosity would egg me on to visit the City of Ancient Heroes. Having neither a turn for Painting or Musick & not understanding the Language I could only visit Rome to say that I had walked on Classic ground, & seen the Nursery of great Men. I will thank you my dear Classmate to make my most repectful compliments to your grandfather, & in remembering me to my Countrymen request you to believe me Yours very sincerely
