To Jonathan Williams, Jr. (unpublished)
Philada April 9. 1786.
Dear Jonathan

I duly receiv’d yours of Feb. 16: with the Copy of the Journal for which am much oblig’d: I am glad you have succeeded in propagating the Lamp; if the Use becomes general, it may be of double Service to our Country, in saving their Tallow for Exportation in Candles, and encouraging the Whale-fishery. I do not well understand what you say of your Tinman’s Improvement by placing the Wicks round, and desire you to explain it in your next. As you are desirous of perfecting yourself in the Crown-soap-making Art, I give you the Opportunity of seeing by the enclos’d what has happened to that lately sent me, at the same time saving for my Sister a little Postage. I thank you for the Copies of my old Uncle’s Verses. I wish you may succeed in getting the Manuscript Book you mention. I am happy to hear that you have finished your Lawsuits to your mind, and hope the Event will be equally satisfactory to your Creditors in France, some of whom still pester me with Letters, which I do not send you. This Family all join in Love to you. Present mine to your good Father and Mother, and believe me ever Your affectionate Uncle
