John Gilbank to the American Commissioners (unpublished)

Honorable Gentlemen

Nantes, December 26, 1778

As I have received no answer from you to my last Letter, I have in Conformity thereto, this day drawn upon you for one thousand Livres in favour of Mr. Schweighauser which I make no doubt you will honour, as there has been more than sufficient Time in case you did not mean to do it to have informed me of it and saved me the additional mortification of having my Draft returned. I will not therefore take up more of your time than to assure you (as the Situation in which I am, is not occasioned by any imprudence of mine), It will in the Eye of the World, have a very bad appearance, if my draft is refused and I am not relieved.

I am Honourable Gentlemen Your most obedient Humble Servant

Jno. Gilbank

p. s. I beg leave to mention, that your Silence hitherto if the matter should be again neglected, has, if it had been otherwise possible, put it out of my power to apply for relief elsewhere it being too late.
