William Temple Franklin to John Jay (unpublished)
Passy 13 April 1781
Sir,

I endeavour’d as I had the honour to inform your Excelly: in my Letter of Yesterday, I should, to procure the Repeater & send it by the Gentleman who does me the favour to take Charge of this: But not finding any that pleased me & at the same time conform to your Instructions, I thought it best to give Directions for having such a one made & so wait for another Opportunity of sending it to Madrid.

In the mean time, I inclose for your Exys: Satisfaction an Acct: of the Purchases I have already made for you, and which went by the Courier. The amount (247 £) my Grandfather has paid, & if you will please to deduct it when you draw for your Salary.

If I have been lucky enough to have executed your Exys: Commissions to your Satisfaction, I hope you will in future favour me with your Commands, & be persuaded that I shall ever esteem it an Honour to render myself in the smallest degree useful to you.

And here I cannot avoid adding how happy it would make me to be plac’d near your Exy if the Arrangement mentioned by my Grandfather should at any time be brought about. Being With sincere & Great Esteem. Your Exy: Yr: &ca.
