Richard Bache to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Philadelphia September 13th: 1779
Dear Temple

Your Letter of the 13th: August 1778. I received and answered many months ago; but having lately received from France a duplicate to the Memoire inquiring after Henry Dieudonné Drouart, I apprehend the Intelligence I before transmitted to you concerning him, hath never reached you—.

I now therefore inclose to you a Letter from him to his father, wherein, I suppose, he gives his friends every satisfaction they can wish; he called here a few days ago to inquire for Letters from his Friends, and was in good health.

I shall be extreamly happy to hear from you on all occasions, & tho’ I can’t suppose you to have much idle time on your hands, I wish you to steal an hour or two now & then, to let me know what is doing in the European World; this Campaign both here & in Europe seems big with great Events, I hope they may be such, as will conduce to a general & lasting peace.

The Chevalier la Luzerne has not made his appearance here yet, he is expected in a few days, being, as we are told, on his Journey from Boston—He must be a very clever Fellow indeed, if he gives that satisfaction to all ranks of People his Predecessor has given, excell him, he cannot—The departure of Mr. Gerard is universally regretted; Mrs. Bache & myself are sensibly touched with the loss of him, so much has he recommended himself by his Civility & good Sense—Mrs. Bache & the Children join me in affectionate regards for you.—I am Dear Temple Your affectionate Kinsman,

Rich. Bache
