Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
St. Germain le 1 Sept. 1783.
my dear Friend

I never a moment doubted your [?], & not since every endeavour on your part was exerted, but my Impatience would not permit me to remain, & you know in such Situations will is governed more by [?] than Reason. I am so well convinced that you will do my Business better than myself that I have concluded not to appear till after Friday, and I request you not to mention my arrival to any one. I thank you for the sauf conduite. tho’ I am in no apprehension about my Person even in the worst event: It is my property I want recover’d you know by the Laws of France a man for a Dett of £100 Livres can attach & keep up a million & this prejudices other Creditors—I want no power from Court but the Power of doing equal Justice. I will remain quiet ’till Friday in the mean Time I request you to do as you would have done had I remained at Nantes; You will readily see my motive for not appearing till after I have my L S for as soon as I come to passy I must see Chaumont Morice & Bernier & I can talk much better with my arrêt in my Pocket than without it.

My Father in Law has communicated me the plan of a Contract with the F. G. he requests you to Main a list of the Names of those who compose the Tobacco Committee, so as proper applications may be made. I am sorry to hear the Doctor has again the Gout. give my affectionate [torn] to him. Pray send out what letters may come to me. I am as ever yours most affectionately
